Elapse was the strangest ballet I've seen, for me it was depressingly dreary. Though the dancers were perfectly in sync there was zero joy. A dark stage, dour expressions, tedious music, very odd body, arm, hand movements, weird 12" antler/branches on dancers' heads and a nonstop smoke machine. I love the ballet, wanted and tried to like this one. My honest response was utter dismay, no offense intended. The other 3 performances last Sat. evening were fabulous: Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, The Lightning Round, and 4 Seasons were outstanding and standing ovation worthy! Very entertaining!! The dancers, orchestra, conductors all in fine, top form. Still smiling!!!

It's not supposed to be a joyous piece. It's meditative, introspective, mournful- reflective of the passage of time.

I don't know about the History of Swan Lake, but I think I kind of like this version not only with Odette as a White Swan by day and a Humane Human by night, but with the White Swan Princess vs. the Black Swan Princess at the ball a lot better.

I saw The Houston Ballet's "new" Nutcracker last night (Dec 2023). I was heart- broken. I left before the intermission. Ben Stevenson's version was an absolute masterpiece. Breath-taking in every way. I have seen it many times. It was a holiday tradition for me. Absolutely magnificent. I was heart-broken last night. Rode home in the Uber wondering what in the hell happened. RIP Nutcracker.

As someone who is in this performance, this comment was very rude and hurt me as well as the others in this wonderful production. I truly hope you have thought of how absolutely horrible this comment. When I read this to my friend, they burst into tears. They said “if nobody likes it does it mean we are bad?” This person was a small child and was extremely upset with what you said. I hope you think about such things when commenting this.

I loved this interview. I wish it could be several sessions because there is still so much that could be asked. I wish I had lived in New York to see Ashley and so many more. Regarding Farrell, things had come to a boil - Suzanne Farrell in Elusive Muse -described that she was so torn between her husband and Balanchine that she thought of taking her own life. So she was suffering alot. Balanchine, devastated by her sudden surprise marriage kept taking roles from Paul Meija, so I think it was Symphony in C that last fateful night when the breakup occured and she told Balanchine, in essence, that Paul couldnt just be taken from his role in Symphony in C and that if that was going to happen she would have to go too. I think Paul was supposed to have danced in Symphony in C that night but had been inexplicably taken off. Farrell explained that she hadn't meant to make a demand to Balanchine at all. She was crying out for help because the situation had become unbearable but Balanchine and Farrell's alliance was thick and emotions were complex and solutions difficult. Balanchine had hoped to marry her so he was devastated when she married Paul because it had all happened so quickly and took him completely off guard. Balanchine was trying his best to handle Farrell's marriage but it was just too much for him. It was very difficult for Paul too. Paul is the nicest person in the world - such an elegant and gracious man- as can be easily seen on the documentary and any video he is in and Paul worshipped Balanchine and never stopped worshipping him, just like Farrell did. Ashley and Farrell were incredibly lucky to have had a life with Balanchine whereby they could fully manufest themselves and then get world-wide recognition and devotion from avid balletomanes.

I love your husband's comments because when you were dancing freely at home there was something non-rigid about it and so your face was free and your beauty really came out. So doing that on stage would be wonderful. I felt the same way. In the very little that I saw of you at that time, there was a certain rigidity of demeanor you had which delayed my appreciation of you but that which eventually came in spades.
